On Monday afternoon, a distressing incident occurred at the UNC (University of North Carolina’s) Chapel Hill campus, resulting in the tragic loss of a faculty member’s life. The university and local authorities reported that the campus went into lockdown for a duration of three hours due to the incident.

The shelter-in-place advisory was issued at approximately 1:02 p.m. in response to reports of gunshots heard around the vicinity of Caudill Laboratories. Law enforcement promptly initiated a search, which led to the apprehension of Tailei Qi. Qi was taken into custody around 2:38 p.m. and is facing charges of first-degree murder and misdemeanor possession of a firearm on an educational property, as confirmed by court records.

The lockdown, which was in effect until approximately 4:14 p.m., was lifted after the police declared the area secure. However, caution was urged as investigators continued their search for evidence within Caudill Labs.

In the aftermath of the incident, UNC Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz expressed his deep sorrow during a press conference. Although he refrained from immediately disclosing the victim’s identity out of respect for notifying the next of kin, he confirmed the tragic event. Guskiewicz conveyed his devastation over the shooting, emphasizing the significance of the university’s academic and research activities taking place within the campus building where the incident occurred.

The campus community’s well-being is a priority, and classes and events have been suspended until Wednesday as a response to the incident. Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina extended his condolences and pledged state support for the investigation.

UNC Chancellor Guskiewicz acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident on students and faculty and stressed the importance of utilizing the resources available to help cope with the aftermath. He urged unity in the face of these distressing events, recognizing that similar tragedies are regrettably occurring nationwide.
